Windows Server 2022: Standard vs Datacenter — कौन सा edition?
वही OS, बहुत अलग virtualization अधिकार। असली अंतर है प्रति लाइसेंस VMs — फ़ीचर्स नहीं।
Standard and Datacenter run identical code — Datacenter is not "faster" or "more stable". The difference is licensing: how many virtual machines each license covers, plus a few storage/networking features.
| Standard | Datacenter | |
|---|---|---|
| VMs per license | 2 VMs (+1 host) | Unlimited VMs |
| Storage Spaces Direct | — | ✓ |
| Shielded VMs | — | ✓ |
| Software-defined networking | — | ✓ |
| Core licensing | Same — 16 core minimum | Same — 16 core minimum |
| Price | $ | $$$ (~6–7×) |
The breakeven question
Both editions license physical cores, not VMs. Standard covers 2 VMs per license — stacking licenses adds 2 more VMs each. Rough math: if a host will run more than about 8–10 VMs, Datacenter becomes cheaper than stacked Standard licenses — plus it unlocks the software-defined storage and networking features.
- •1–2 VMs, file/print/app server → Standard
- •Dense virtualization host → Datacenter
- •Planning Hyper-V cluster growth → Datacenter from the start
- •Physical server only, zero VMs → Standard, obviously
Common trap
VMs are counted per host, per license — moving a VM to another host requires that host to be licensed for it. Size for peak VM density, not average.
