Windows Server 2022: Standard vs Datacenter — ¿qué edición?

Mismo SO, derechos de virtualización muy distintos. La diferencia real son las VM por licencia, no las funciones.

Standard and Datacenter run identical code — Datacenter is not "faster" or "more stable". The difference is licensing: how many virtual machines each license covers, plus a few storage/networking features.

The breakeven question

Both editions license physical cores, not VMs. Standard covers 2 VMs per license — stacking licenses adds 2 more VMs each. Rough math: if a host will run more than about 8–10 VMs, Datacenter becomes cheaper than stacked Standard licenses — plus it unlocks the software-defined storage and networking features.

  • •1–2 VMs, file/print/app server → Standard
  • •Dense virtualization host → Datacenter
  • •Planning Hyper-V cluster growth → Datacenter from the start
  • •Physical server only, zero VMs → Standard, obviously

Common trap

VMs are counted per host, per license — moving a VM to another host requires that host to be licensed for it. Size for peak VM density, not average.
