Licencias de Exchange Server: Standard vs Enterprise y CALs
Licencias de correo on-prem explicadas — qué añade Enterprise, el requisito de CALs y cuándo lo necesitas.
Exchange Server remains the on-prem email backbone for organizations that cannot or will not move to Exchange Online. Licensing has two parts — the server itself and CALs for every accessing user or device.
| Standard | Enterprise | |
|---|---|---|
| Mailbox databases per server | 5 | 100 |
| Core features | Full Exchange | Full Exchange |
| Price | $ | $$$ |
| Best for | Small orgs, single server | Larger orgs, DAGs, many DBs |
The CAL requirement
- •Every user or device accessing Exchange needs an Exchange CAL — separate from Windows Server CALs
- •Exchange Enterprise CAL adds compliance features (in-place hold, DLP) on top of Standard CAL
- •Running Exchange also requires the Windows Server license + its own CALs underneath
Cost reality
Exchange is usually the most licensing-heavy workload on a network — server + Windows CALs + Exchange CALs stack. Count total users before buying; missing CALs are the most common audit finding.
